This controversy reminds me of last spring, when the Pope stated that he didn't believe in the distribution of condoms in Africa. I'm Catholic, and I went to Catholic school my whole life, so I'm familiar with its conservative teachings. But in my opinion, if the Catholic church doesn't loosen its interpretation of doctrine, it will begin to faze out. The founding fathers created our Constitution with an elastic clause in order to comply with the inevitable changing of times. Gay rights now is kind of like a second civil rights movement, so large and influential that it seems like the government is going to comply with its demands. Just as society evolves from conservative to liberal norms, so too must the Catholic Church. I know that there are a lot of faithful Catholics that side with the Church. But in an age where Enlightenment ideals and scientific reason are the founding principles to Western society, most people follow religion as a choice, and not a necessity. So without faith based in more bounding principles, I think that many will slowly turn their back upon the Church, which will be left with little to no voice.
ReplyDeleteIf the Church "loosens" hold on the doctrines, (which, by the way, the Catholic church has done so plenty of times and has resulted in the worship of saints and prayers to the virgin mary, which was never intended by any of the early church founders), the Catholic Church will continue to fall by the wayside. Already they're restricting elders and priests from marrying, while the family is the perfect example of Christ's love and sacrifice and grace. I actually believe this is one of the few and strong steps the Catholic church has taken as of late.
